POLICE WARN ABOUT GARAGE BREAK-IN'S. HERE'S WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT.

Source: saskatoonpolice.ca

The Saskatoon Police Service would like to advise citizens of a recent rash of Break & Enters to residential garages. Since October, there have been more than 40 occurrences reported where the perpetrator(s) had gained entry to garages with wooden overhead doors by removing one of the panels. Many times tools and machinery including large items like a snowmobile and snow blowers were taken, and in some cases nothing was taken.

Citizens are encouraged to report any cases as such, regardless of items being taken or not, and to keep a vigilant eye in their neighbourhood for suspicious activity or vehicles in alleyways or driveways that have garages with wooden overhead doors.

Added security such as motion lights and recorded video cameras can be beneficial to these investigations and should be referenced when reporting.

USE THIS CHECKLIST FOR BETTER GARAGE SECURITY

 Make sure everything is locked

The easiest way for an intruder to break in is without forced entry; you left a door or window unlocked. Make it part of your routine to ensure all access points are secure when you are done using your garage. The same applies for access points with your home and vehicles.

 Add motion lighting

A motion light has two components - a motion sensor and a light. When the motion sensor PIR detects a change in heat the light turns on an illuminates the area. Intruders do not like lighting because it's easier to identify them. Motion lights can be purchased from your local hardware storeWe recommend a models with LED lighting. Solar-powered models are very easy to install on your own without contracting an electrician.

 Add Door and Window Sensors

A door or window sensor is connected to a security system and lets you know when a door or window is opened. An armed sensor triggers a siren and notifies our 24/7 Monitoring Stations to dispatch the Police.

Note: Most wireless sensors require a heated garage, 0 degrees Celsius or warmer to function properly. Cold temperature sensors are available.

 Add a Motion Sensor

A motion sensor is connected to a security system and lets you know when there is movement in front of the sensor. An armed sensor triggers a siren and notifies our 24/7 Monitoring Stations to dispatch the Police. This sensor would detect when an intruder removes a wooden door panel from an overhead door and enters the garage.

Note: Most wireless sensors require a heated garage, 0 degrees Celsius or warmer to function properly. Cold temperature sensors are available.

Add Window Bars or Security Shutters

Sometimes adding security sensors isn't enough. In this case you should add a physical barrier to deter and prevent entry. Metal window bars can be purchased from your local hardware store. Roll up security shutters can be purchased online.

Add a Siren with Flashing Strobe Light

A exterior siren with flashing strobe light is connected to a security system. When triggered by a door, window or motion sensor it creates 110db of unwanted ATTENTION. Intruders often leave the property.

 Partition the House and Garage

Modern home security systems have a programming feature called "partitioning". This allows areas to be armed/disarmed independently from each other. Partition 1 can be the Home and Partition 2 can be the Garage. When you are not using your garage make sure it is armed.

 Add Security Cameras

A security camera allows you to keep an eye on things and acts as both a deterrent and recovery tool. All evidence is recorded either to a cloud or local NVR (network video recorder) and is used in Police investigations.

REEDHD ColorVu security cameras use ultra low light sensors and a spotlight to see in full color at night.

 Add Warning Signage

We provide "Protected by Reed Security" warning signs and decals to our clients. When you have a monitored security system you are 400% less likely to experience a break in. Make sure intruders know you are protected.

All security devices are eligible for the Saskatchewan Home Renovation Tax Credit.

WARNING: EVEN COVID-19 CAN'T STOP THE DOOR TO DOOR ALARM SCAM

Hi, I'm Alex. I'm your friendly neighborhood (well not really) summer student that works for a door to door home security company.  At first my company was going to respect your boundaries and stay away from your personal space, but Nah - who are we kidding :)

During the school year I work pretty hard studying Business and from May to September I work hard knocking on a lot of doors - and by a lot I mean I've been to thousands of homes with my crew. I work with a crew of 20 or more reps, so it's a lot of fun!

The door to door home security company that I work for provided me with training. I'm proud to say that I have one whole week of product training. We spent most of the time on high pressure sales training and how to overcome objections. I'm pretty confident that no matter how many times you say "no thanks" or demand that I leave - I've always got a comeback. Take a look at some of my door to door sales training classes:

CORONAVIRUS ISN'T THAT BAD - NO MATTER WHAT THE W.H.O. OR C.D.C. SAYS

HOW TO USE DECEPTION - WHITE LIES ARE JUST BENDING THE RULES

HOW TO NAME DROP AND MAKE IT SOUND LIKE THE NEIGHBORS REFERRED YOU (WHEN THEY DIDN'T)

HOW TO MAKE IT SOUND LIKE OUR "FREE" SECURITY SYSTEM IS WORTH $2,000

HOW TO GET PEOPLE TO SIGN 5 YEAR CONTRACTS AT $50 TO $80 A MONTH

IMPERSONATING THE EXISTING SECURITY PROVIDER

HOW TO CREATE URGENCY BY HAVING NO LOCAL OFFICE "WE'RE ONLY HERE TODAY"

HOW TO OVERCOME BUYERS REMORSE WITH A QUICK, SAME DAY INSTALLATION

HOW TO TRICK THE MOST VULNERABLE - SENIOR CITIZENS

WHAT TO DO WHEN THEY SAY "NO"

WHAT TO DO WHEN THEY SAY "NO" REPEATEDLY AND ASK YOU TO LEAVE

WHAT TO DO WHEN THEY SWEAR AT YOU AND THREATEN TO CALL THE POLICE

WHEN GOING BACK 3 TIMES ISN'T ENOUGH

Pretty awesome stuff right? I'm going to make a ton of dough this summer! I don't get a base salary, but I do make $400 to $500 every time I get you to sign up. So, I have a lot of motivation to keep bugging and pressuring you. We don't have a local office and the door to door home security company rents us a house or pays for our hotels, so I don't have a lot of living expenses. Sweet!

Sometimes I pretend that I work for your current security company and I offer you a free upgrade. "I'm Alex with (Your Existing Security Company". People can be so gullible when they think they're getting something for free. I'm actually going to trick you into signing up with my door to door alarm company and you will be left paying two bills. Doesn't matter to me though - I'm only working with my door to door security company for the summer and you will never see me again.

My all time favorite approach is to make it sound like you are doing me a favor. "I'm Alex with (Door to Door Alarm Company). We're in town for a few days and we're doing a blitz and I would like your help. If you're willing to put a warning sign in a visible location it will create more awareness and help us generate more business. In exchange I can give you a free state-of-the-art security system worth $2000. All you have to do is take care of the small monthly fee of $49.95 a month." People love to help and they love free. I can't believe how many people get sucked in.

Sometimes I offer a two week free trial. This is legit, but most people don't know there is a CONSUMER PROTECTION law that allows any consumer signing a contract the right to cancel within 10 or 14 days. It's called a Buyers Right to Cancel and it's on every one of our contracts. The darn government forces us to do this!

I often tell people it's a month to month subscription, but in reality it's a 4 or 5 year contract. You're on the hook for nearly $3000 every time you sign up. However, most people trust me instead of reading through the contract. And for the people that question the 5 year term? Easy, I just tell them they can cancel anytime (even though they can't). The collections team at my head office will deal with it. Who's going to cancel if they're about to be sent to a collection agency? I won't be here anyways so not my problem.

HOW TO MAKE ME GO AWAY

About the only thing that works is to put up your hand and firmly say "NO". I'm going to try to prevent you from closing the door, but if you just keep saying "NO" eventually I will take you off my hit list. Sometimes you have to threaten to call the POLICE. How ironic is that - calling the POLICE on a home security company.

It's also frustrating to me when people share their stories on FaceBook and other social media sites. I spent a lot of time figuring out ways to deceive people and I don't like it when I'm exposed or people advertise what area I'm working in. One lady took out her phone and started recording me - no thanks.

GET AFTER SCHOOL PEACE OF MIND WITH SMARTHOME TECHNOLOGY

Smart home security is a back-to-school essential for many working families with older children.

With an array of after-school safeguards for your kids, it delivers peace of mind throughout the school year and for years to come. Your kids can even grow into it as they become more independent.

Fewer keys means fewer worries

As soon as your kids are old enough to arrive home on their own, Alarm.com starts making things easier with keyless smart locks and user codes for easy access.

Unlike keys, user codes can't be dropped, lost on the bus, or left in the door. If forgotten, its owner can ring the doorbell camera and you can unlock the door from work. Like a set of keys, however, your child's first user code can still confer a sense of responsibility that they'll love.

Technology makes check-ins less challenging

With every school year, your kids grow a little more independent. Meanwhile, you worry just as much as you ever did, and you need to know they're okay after school.

Your Alarm.com app is here to help, offering peace of mind via quick, visual check-ins. You can see a quick snapshot from any Image Sensor, view a live feed from your indoor or outdoor cameras, and even get front-door video clips of your kids arriving home.

If you prefer a hands-off approach, Alarm.com also offers a range of custom alerts for specific activity and events, such as the kids not arriving home on time, or even the video game cabinet being open for too long.

Smart reminders ensure that your house stays secure

As kids get older, they have more going on, which means they forget things. Unfortunately, this often includes securing the house when they're last to leave.

Alarm.com can help with actionable smartphone reminders. Once your teens have their own Alarm.com app, your house can remind them directly if a door isn't locked, or the garage is open, or the security system isn't armed when it should be. They'll be able to fix things quickly with a remote command.

5 OUTDOOR HOME SECURITY MUST HAVES FOR SUMMER

With summer barbecues and parties to prepare for, and warm summer evenings to enjoy, it's the time of year to pay attention to your home's outdoor space.

After all, you won't be the only one doing so.  Summer is prime time for burglars. It's the season of unlocked windows, open doors and garages, and long vacation absences.

Outdoor security is your home's first line of defense - so how does yours shape up? Does it deter intruders at first glance, or invite them to take a second look?

These outdoor security essentials - all available as part of a Reed Security Smart Home system will provide you peace of mind all summer long, letting you make the most of the warm weather, worry-free.

1. Smart Security Camera

Essential for: Knowing what's happening outside.

Most smart security cameras will let you know if there's activity outside. This one can
tell you whether it's an animal, person or vehicle, and whether or not they're on your property. Customize your video alerts to see everything you want to know about—without the everyday activity that doesn't matter.

As well as sending you live and recorded footage of your outdoor space, these cameras also send a clear message to visitors: I have a smart home security system. That's enough to keep most burglars away

2. Smart Lighting

Essential for: Keeping visitors visible.

Shadowy characters rarely like to be in the spotlight—and this goes double for burglars. Automated outdoor lighting, triggered by your Alarm.com image sensors or smart security cameras, ensures that intruders have nowhere to hide after dark.

Going on vacation? It's easy to set up a smart lighting schedule so that Alarm.com turns your lights on every evening, giving passers-by the impression that you're home.

3. Contact Sensors

Essential for: Security and child safety

With Alarm.com, a little information goes a long way. Installed on a door or window, this wireless contact sensor can alert our 24/7 Monitoring Stations to a break-in, remind you to lock up for the night, or let you know that your kids are exploring the great outdoors on their own.

When school's out, contact sensors become an essential outdoor safeguard for parents, giving you a new way to keep tabs on your pool gate, yard gate, tool shed, garage freezer or other dangerous areas that you want to keep off-limits from curious kids.

4. Doorbell Camera

Essential for: Protecting your porch

With plenty of package thieves and dishonest visitors out there, an Alarm.com Doorbell Camera is the best form of deterrence for your front porch. With motion-triggered video alerts, a live video feed and two-way voice, you can see and speak to visitors from anywhere, whether they ring the bell or not.

Expecting a delivery or a late arrival to your outdoor party? Just open your Alarm.com app when the doorbell rings, verify your visitor, and unlock your door with your Alarm.com-powered smart lock.

5. Smart Garage Door Opener

Essential for: Protecting outdoor equipment and tools

Summer brings long evening bike rides, road trips, and plenty of outdoor DIY - all of which means plenty of opportunity to leave your garage door wide open. Incorporate this Alarm.com-powered garage door controller into your security system and you'll never be caught out.

Should you leave home with the garage still open, Alarm.com knows (thanks to Geo-Services technology) and sends you a reminder. No need to pedal back home or turn the car around: just tap your phone to close the door, secure your bikes and tools and protect this commonly-overlooked entrance to your home.
